Applying for citizenship

Canadian citizenship timeline: from signature to oath

Enter the day you sign: the timeline places each step in order, dates only where an IRCC rule fixes them. Your invitation dates can be added further down.

It is also the application date of the presence calculation.

    IRCC: the citizenship ceremony
Timeline of a Canadian citizenship application, from signature to oath: only the dates an IRCC rule fixes are computed; hatched steps are dated by IRCC.

A Canadian citizenship application moves through the same steps for every adult: you sign and date the form, IRCC confirms it received it, checks that it is complete, sends an acknowledgement of receipt, invites you to the test if you are 18 to 54, may call you to an interview, then invites you to a ceremony where you take the oath. Some of these dates follow from a rule and can be worked out today. Your 1,095 days are counted in the 5 years before the day you sign. A paper file that reaches IRCC more than 90 days after the date on the form is sent back. A test invitation opens a 30-day period with 3 attempts. The ceremony invitation comes at least 1 week ahead, and a new date must be requested within 30 days of the ceremony. The other dates depend on IRCC's review of your file, so the timeline above shows them hatched, in order, without guessing a delay.

Your own dates, once IRCC sends them

The timeline above starts from your signature. When the test invitation and the ceremony invitation arrive, enter their dates below: the tool adds the last day of your test period, the latest day the ceremony invitation can arrive and the last day to ask for another ceremony date.

No processing time is estimated here: IRCC sets the date of each step that depends on its review.

Before you sign: the window that decides everything

The day you sign is also the application date used in the physical presence calculation, and IRCC requires you to be eligible on the day before. That one date fixes the five-year window. Signing a week too early can leave you a few days short and get the application refused, while signing later costs nothing. Check the first possible day with the day-by-day calculator before you date the form, then fill in the timeline above with that date.

From receipt to acknowledgement

IRCC first reviews the file for missing answers, documents or payment, as its page on what happens after you apply explains. Online, the automatic confirmation only says the file arrived. The acknowledgement of receipt, sent once the file is complete, is the real start: it gives the application number and the identifier you use to check the status. If something is missing, the file comes back with a list, and the whole timeline starts again from a new signature. The application page lists the documents that are most often forgotten.

Test, interview, then the ceremony

Applicants aged 18 to 54 on the day they signed are invited to the test after they apply. Once the invitation arrives, enter its date in the tool: it shows the last day of your 30-day period. After a pass, an interview may follow; IRCC also picks some files at random for a detailed quality review that can include an interview. The interview page explains what to bring. The last step is the citizenship ceremony: enter the date of your invitation and the tool shows the last day to ask for another date.

What this timeline leaves out

It does not estimate how long IRCC takes between steps; it does not cover fingerprint requests, which IRCC sends only to some applicants; and it applies to adults and minors applying through the general route. Citizenship by descent is confirmed through a certificate, not through these steps: see the page on citizenship by descent. To practise for step 5 while you wait, the timed mock test uses the real format.

What applicants ask

Is the confirmation email the same as the acknowledgement of receipt?

No. When you submit online, an automatic email confirms that IRCC received the application. The acknowledgement of receipt comes later, once IRCC has checked that the file is complete; it means processing has started and it carries your application number and your unique client identifier, which you need to follow the file.

What happens to the timeline if my application is incomplete?

IRCC returns it without processing the fee. To send it again you add what was missing, sign and date the form again and, as an adult, recalculate your physical presence for the new date. IRCC states that the processing time then starts over, so the timeline restarts from the new signature.

Can I travel while my citizenship application is in progress?

Yes, if you keep your permanent resident status, can receive IRCC's mail and emails and answer them in time, usually within 30 days, and can be in Canada for the test if you are 18 to 54, the interview and the ceremony. IRCC asks to be told about absences of more than two weeks in a row.

Why does this page give no processing time?

Because it depends on IRCC, not on a rule you can apply yourself: IRCC lists the type of application, completeness, the files already waiting, how easily your information is verified and how fast you answer. The tool only computes dates that a published rule fixes, and leaves the others marked as set by IRCC.
